Sustainability

Every tonne of virgin carbon black produces 2.4 t CO2-e. greenhouse gas emissions from petroleum extraction and refining, and the carbon black furnace production process. Sustainability was inevitable.

Waverly Carbon is working towards a certified life cycle assessment. Our focus is on delivery based on the following environmental statements:

  • Near zero production carbon emissions.
  • Energy-efficient manufacturing – uses far less energy than virgin carbon black. A typical plant uses 500 kWh per tonne of carbon black.
  • Fossil fuel savings – producing 1 kg of virgin carbon black requires 1.5–2 kg of oil; replacing it with recovered carbon black (rCB) saves up to 2 kg of oil per kg.
  • Greenhouse gas reduction – virgin carbon black production emits 2.5–3 t CO₂ per tonne. rCB currently emits ~0.7 t CO₂-e, saving ~1.7 t CO₂-e per tonne (to be confirmed via LCA).
  • Integrated process benefits – co-locating pyrolysis and rCB lines reduces transport emissions and uses excess heat and gas efficiently
  • Lower toxic emissions – virgin carbon black production produces polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter; our process minimizes these hazards.
  • Circularity for tyre manufacturing – rCB can use rubber process waste generated in tyre production, as an alternative to ELT waste – helping tyre manufacturers manage their own production waste.
